New Year Resolutions

Perfectionism can be a heavy burden to carry, especially when it comes to resolutions. Every goal feels like a contract, every misstep a failure. For someone like me, who prefers structure and strives to create with precision, resolutions can be downright exhausting. The pursuit of perfection often overshadows the joy of the process, and I’ve learned the hard way that focusing solely on the destination leaves little room for grace or growth.

The Bible says, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9, ESV).

This verse reminds me that the journey is divinely orchestrated, even when it doesn’t align with my carefully drawn map. The beauty is in trusting that each step—even the ones that feel off-course—has a purpose.

The Beauty of the Journey

As someone deeply connected to creative expression, I’ve seen how the process often becomes a true masterpiece. For instance, the learning moments often hold more meaning than the final product. It’s in those moments of trial and error that we uncover something new about craft—and ourselves.

Let’s look at some examples from my own experiences:

  • While developing a concept for a design, a friend often found inspiration in the unlikeliest places—a messy palette, an unexpected texture, or even a stray idea that didn’t fit the initial plan.

  • When planning a creative project, I’ve realized that detours—like pausing to explore a fresh perspective—lead to richer, more fulfilling outcomes.

  • Collaborating with others has taught me that letting go of control can lead to results far more vibrant and meaningful than anything I could have achieved alone.

These moments aren’t distractions; they’re the essence of the journey.

An Intentional Journey

  1. Embrace Grace Over Perfection: Allow yourself to make mistakes. They’re not failures; they’re stepping stones.

  2. Celebrate Progress: Did you try a new medium? Experiment with a bold idea. That’s growth worth celebrating, no matter how small.

  3. Let Go of Control: Trust the process, even when it feels messy. Remember, the most beautiful creations often have layers of complexity beneath their surface.

  4. Be Open to Redirection: Sometimes, the journey takes you somewhere you didn’t expect—and that’s okay. Let those detours teach you something new.

Stories of Growth

I remember one project where I meticulously planned every detail, only for a key element to fall through. Initially, I felt defeated, but as I improvised, the project took on a life of its own. The result wasn’t what I’d envisioned, but it was better—a reflection of adaptability and creative freedom.

A friend of mine decided to explore a new medium, even though it felt outside their comfort zone. The early stages were rough, but they discovered techniques that they now use regularly. That journey taught us to value exploration over immediate results.

Trust the Process

This year, I’m letting go of rigid expectations. Instead of chasing perfect resolutions, I’m choosing to trust the journey. Whether it’s diving into a new creative endeavor, refining an existing skill, or exploring uncharted territories, I’m embracing the process as it comes.

After all, life isn’t about flawless execution—it’s about the moments that shape us, the lessons we learn, and the grace we find along the way. Let’s make room for the unexpected, the imperfect, and the beautifully unfinished.

Reflective Questions

  • What is one goal you’ve been hesitant to pursue because it feels too big or overwhelming? How can you break it into smaller, more manageable steps?

  • When was the last time you allowed yourself to explore something new without worrying about the outcome? What did you learn from that experience?

  • How can you celebrate small wins in your creative or personal journey this year?

  • Are there areas in your life where you’re holding onto perfectionism? What would it look like to embrace grace instead?

  • What is one detour or challenge you faced recently that taught you something valuable? How did it shape your perspective?

With faith and perseverance, Meekness
